Bhairab Kunda trek is classified as a spiritual trekking route of Nepal; which is located northeast of Kathmandu valley, closer to the boarder of Nepal and Tibetan. Bhairab Kunda Lake is one of the holy Lake and dedicated to Lord Bhairab (Destructive from the Lord Shiva) and the Hindu pilgrims pay their respect to the Bhairabnath and Shiva every full moon day of August.

The Bhairab Kunda trekking trail start from Jalbire village, 5 to 6 hours scenic drive from Kathmandu and passes through the beautiful villages rewarding by stunning mountain views called Langtang Lirung 7227 m, Ganesh Himal 7073m, Dorje Lakpa 6979m, Langsisha 6560m, Paldor 5903m, Rolwaling 7180 meters and as well as far view of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu and Jugal mountain ranges.

Beyond the high mountain views, the Bhairab Kunda trekking trail commands to the trekkers to see magnificent views of River valleys, wide meadows, gigantic pastureland, waterfalls, huge rocky hills and green forest of Pine, Oak, Silver-birch, Juniper, bamboo, Rhododendron and Magnolia. Due to walk through the forest; the trekking route also purpose to see some of the wildlife such as Musk deer, monkeys, Himalayan Thar, Blue sheep and many specious of birds and butterflies.

The low region of Bhairab Kunda trek is inhabitant by the Brahman and Kshetri; which are well known as high castes and Hindus of Nepal so trekkers get chance to visit some the Hindu shrines, temples and sacred places and the higher region is covered by Tamang and Sherpa people; and practicing Buddhism so trekkers will explore some of the old monasteries, colorful people, traditional villages, enigmatic yaks and hundreds of Mani walls, Chortens and Kani gates.

Tour Details

Day 01 – Drive to Jalbire (1000m.a.s.l) – 4 and half hours drive – we will drive about three hours to Balephi which is a small towns and used to be one of the main town on the trade route to Tibet. During the driving period we will have magnificent valley of Balephi and stunning mountain views. After Balephi town, we will drive further on a dirt road for another one hour to get Jalbire where we will spend our first night of the trek.

Day 02: Trek to Chanaute (1350m.a.s.l) – 4 hours walk – Chanaute village is inhabitant by the Brahmin and Kshetri people which are known as high castes of Nepal. Trek from Jalbire to Chanaute takes about four hours and easy walk due to walk on the flat trail and pleasant view of waterfalls, terraced field and green forest. Today we will set up our tent nearby the school where we will relax and enjoy with the mountain views.

Day 03: Trek to Khani Gaun (2000m.a.s.l) – 6 hours walk – Today we will head towards Khani Gaun; which is also known as Dolle Pokhari (Round Lake) is a beautiful Newar village. Trek from Chanaute to Khani Gaun takes about 6 hours. Most of the time we have to walk on the uphill trail with the view of terraced field, rocky hills, green forest and waterfalls and stunning mountain views.

Day 04 – Khani Gaun – Rest day – Khani guan is a beautiful Newar village where we can see their culture, traditions and costumes so after the lunch we will explore the village and talk with locals and hang around with local kids.

Day 05 – Trek to Forest Camp (3150m.a.s.l) – 5 hours walk – Trek of the day would be little bit harder than previous days because we have to climb up an approximately 5 hours through the Pine, Oak, Rhododendron, Bamboo, Silver-birch and Magnolia. Along the trail; we will have charm landscape views, waterfalls, huge rocky hills and as well as some of the nomad houses for the cattle. We will set up our tent at forest camp; which is surrounding by the beautiful Nepalese Jungle.

Day 06 – Trek to Pati Bhanjyang (3765m.a.s.l) – 5 hours walk – The trail from forest camp to Pati Bhanjyang is mostly uphill but still the walk would be very pleasant due to trek through the forest of Pine, rhododendron, Oak, Bamboo and glorious snow-capped mountains and peaks. Along the trekking trail; we can see some of the wildlife such as musk deer, Monkeys and many specious of bird and butterflies.

Day 07 – Trek to Bhairav Kund (Bhairab Lake 4250m.as.l) – 4 hours walk – Bhairab Lake is one of the holy and pilgrimage Lake for the Hindu people and hundreds of Hindu pilgrims comes here to pray Lord BhairabNath (The destructive of lord Shiva) every year of June and July. Begins of the trek we will trek an approximately one and half hours on the uphill trail then rest of trek is mostly level out to get Bhairab Kunda.

Day 08 – Trek to Sherpa Gaun (2500m.a.s.l) – 6 to 7 hours walk – Today; we will start our trek earlier than previous days due to catch the sunrise view from the top of the Bhairab Kunda (Lake). An approximately two hours uphill trail bring us the top of the Bhairab Kunda and the top commands us to see magnificent views of Langtang, Jugal, Ganesha Himal ranges and some of the snow-capped peaks of The Tibet. From top of the Bhairab Kunda top we will trek down steeply through dense forest to get Sherpa Gaun (Sherpa village).

Day 09 – Trek to Larche (1500m.as.l) – 4 hours walk – Begins of the morning; we will walk down an approximately four hours following by the bank of the Bhote Koshi river to get Larche where we will set our tent to spend a last joyful night. There is a source of natural hot spring, takes about thirty minutes from the camp so after set up all tents we will go there to take hot shower.

Day 10 – Drive back to Kathmandu by bus – After exploration of sacred Lake Bhairab Kunda, we will drive an approximately 6 hours to get kathmandu with view of agricultural terraced field, beautiful villages, River valleys and green forest. after arriving in Kathmandu we will celebrate our succeed of the trek.

Autumn season is considered as best season to do trekking trip in Nepal due to see magnificent Himalayan views, clear sky without any clouds and Spring season is second best season to explore Himalayas of Nepal because will be dry weather and dusty; means poorer Himalayan views but the compensations are several; fewer crowds, warm weather and spectacular Rhododendrons, magnolias and Orchids blooms.

October to November – In general the first two months of the dry season offer the best weather for trekking and the main trails are heaving with trekkers at this time, for good reason.the air is crystal clear, the mountain scenery is superb and the weather is still comfortably warm.

December to February – These months are also good time for trekking trip to higher region but the cold can be bitter and dangerous at high altitudes. Getting up to the higher region and high passes can be a real endurance test and high passes are often blocked by snow.

March to April – These months are dry weather and dusty; means poorer Himalayan views but the compensations are several; fewer crowds, warm weather and spectacular Rhododendrons, magnolias and Orchids blooms.

June to September – These months are rainy season of Nepal so monsoon rains bring landslides, slippery trails and hordes of leeches. Raging rivers often wash away bridges and stretches of trekking path.

Itinerary plan – The  itinerary plan is flexible so it is possible to customize according to trekker’s desire, health condition and physical fitness.

 Permits required – The Bhairab kunda trek is a part of Langtang national park and one of the Protected area of Nepal so for those trekkers who would like to trek into these region then have pay 3000 Nepali rupees for the trekking permit and 10$ for the Tims card.

Food – All tea houses have similar menus which feature local traditional Nepali items such ass local hand made breads, potatoes and Dal Baht which rice served with lentil soup with vegetable curry and typical pickles and selected western dishes like pasta, macaroni, pizza, noodles and burgers. Keep in mind most dishes are vegetarian.

Water – water bottle is available in all tea houses however, be mindful of the environmental impact your purchase/plastic bottle will have. Untreated water is available in all teahouses free of charge. Carry your own water treatment system. Boiled water is available for additional charge.

Accommodation -You will be sleeping in private rooms in teahouses. They usually have two single beds with mattress and blankets are available by request. Bathrooms (squat style) are mostly shared; you will need to carry your own toilet paper. Toilet paper is available for purchase throughout the trek. Cold showers are always available. Hot showers or hot bucket are available in some teahouses for additional charge.

High altitude sickness and prevention of it – Altitude sickness, mildest from being acute mountain sickness is the negative health effect of high altitude, caused by rapid exposure to low amounts of oxygen at high elevation. Acute mountain sickness can progress to high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) with associated shortness of breath or high altitude cerebral edema (HACE) with associated confusion. Chronic mountain sickness may occur after long-term exposure to high altitude.

Symptoms of high altitude sickness – Headache, Dizziness, Nausea, Vomiting, Fatigue and loss of energy, Shortness of breath, insomnia, loss of appetite, skin discoloration (change into the blue, gray or pale), confusion, coughing, coughing of bloody mucus, chest tightness, decreased consciousness, difficult to walk in a straight line and shortness of breath even at rest.

How to skip high altitude sickness? – Ascend slowly, Get good rest, Drink plenty of water, eat appropriately, avoid the alcoholic beverage, do well acclimatization and take advise from your doctor before to get high elevation.

One can get fairly excited about a trip to a previously unknown location. But while traveling you need to make sure that you have all materials that you would require to be ready for every possible situation. And here in Nepal, you will most definitely need to pack a few things for your stay to be as smooth and memorable as possible.
