Lumba Sumba trek is one of the newly explored trekking trails of Nepal which is situated in the Kanchenjunga conservation area project and Makalu Barun national park. The trek is a combination of natural beauties and cultural diversities of Tamang, Limbu, Sherpa, Gurung, and Kirati peoples which are the major ethnic groups of eastern Nepal.

Trek into the Kanchenjunga conservation area project and Makalu Barun national park purpose to see dozens of snow-capped peaks known as Lumba Sumba 5740m, Kambachen7903m, Drohama peak 6850m, Sarphu 6220m, Phole peak 6645m, Tangga peak 6433m and two of top ten mountains of the world called Makalu and Kanchenjunga.

Beyond the high mountain views, the Lumba Sumba trekking trail commands to the trekkers to see magnificent views of River valleys, wide meadows, gigantic pastureland, waterfalls, huge rocky hills and green forest of Pine, Oak, Silver-birch, Juniper, bamboo, Rhododendron and Magnolia. Due to walk through the forest; the trekking route also purposes to see some of the wildlife such as Musk deer, monkeys, Himalayan Thar, Blue Sheep, and many specious of birds and butterflies.

The low region of Lumba Sumba trek is inhabitant by the Brahman and Kshetri; which are well known as high castes and Hindus of Nepal so trekkers get chance to visit some the Hindu shrines, temples and sacred places and the higher region is covered by Tamang and Sherpa people; and practicing Buddhism so trekkers will explore some of the old monasteries, colorful people, traditional villages, enigmatic yaks and hundreds of Mani walls, Chortens and Kani gates.

After Lumba Sumba pass; trekkers enter into the Arun valley which is well known as homeland for the Rai people who are also known as Kirati people. Kirati peoples has their own languages, tradition, culture, costumes and religion. Most of the Kiratis are depending on agriculture and animal husbandry so during the trekking period trekkers will get great chance to know about brahmin, Sherpa, Tamang, Gurung, Bhotiya, Limboo and Rai peoples and their difference culture diversities.

Tour Details

Day 01- Fly to Biratnagar and drive to – The flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar takes about 35 minutes and purpose to see stunning view of high Himalayan ranges known as Everest, Ganesha Himal, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Manaslu and Annapurna. From Biratnagar we will drive approximately three hours to get Birtamod Bazaar which is a beautiful town located nearby border of India. After lunch in Birtamod, we will explore a Hindu shrine called Arjundhara and spend the night at guesthouse.

Day 02 – Drive to Phungling (1705m.a.s.l) – 6 hours drive – we will drive towards Phungling Bazaar pass by dozens of settlements, verdant paddy field and lush forest of Sall and Sishau. The 6 hours drives bring us to Phungling Bazaar; which is headquarter of Taplejung District. There are dozens of guesthouse in Phungling Bazaar and purpose to explore some of the Hindu shrines and temples.

 Day 03 – Trek to Mitlung village (921m.a.s.l) – 5 to 6 hours walk – Today we will head towards Chhiruwa village that may takes about 5 to 6 hours, will depend on our walking speed. The trail leads us through beautiful cardamom gardens, cultivated farms with magnificent views of green landscapes, Tamor River valleys, waterfalls and rugged rocky hills. There are half dozens of small villages between Phungling and Mitlung called Hirewa, Ajibung, Sanwagaun, Ashangpati, Hangdewa village where if needed possible to have basic foods and accommodation.

Day 04 – Trek to Chhiruwa village (1270m.a.s.l) – 6 hours walk – The trail leads us along the banks of the Tamor River and uphill and downhill path passes through Phurumbu, Siwa, Lingkhim and Tawa village to get Chhiruwa village. Siwa village is a beautiful town and good place to have lunch because it commands to see charm landscapes views, terraced field and green forest from the yard of the teashop. From Tawa village; the trail ascends until the check post of Kanchenjunga conservation area project at Thiwa village then short descend trail bring us to Chhiruwa which is a small town and has half dozens of homestays and beautiful camping sites.

Day 05 – Trek to Lelep village (1687m.a.s.l) – 6 hours walk – we will trek along the Tamor River again like previous days pass by huge two rocks, lush forest, Cardamom gardens, a wide landslides and two hours walk from Chhiruwa village bring us to Tapethok which is a small town and has couples of teashop, homestays and check post of Kanchenjunga conservation area project. We will have our lunch at Tapethok and continuously head towards Lelep village; which is a small town has couples of teashop, groceries, homestays and beautiful camping sites.

Day 06 – Trek to Ila Danda (Ela Danda) (2051m.a.s.l) – 6 hours walk – The trail leads us again banks of the Tamor river and passes through the pine and oak forest rewarding by the views of river valleys, waterfalls, rugged rocky hill and wide meadows. Along the trail, we will cross some wooden and suspension bridges and a beautiful monastery. From here the trail descend gradually to Gowatar village where can be seen two waterfalls and a huge rock. Trek from Gowatar to Ila Danda takes another one and half hours; which is our destination for tonight.

Day o7 – Trek to Selep kharka (2225m.a.s.l) – 7 hours walk – we will have beautiful sunrise view on the background of Kasturi peak then the fascinating path make us glade and fresh, forested trail gives us chance to see some wildlife such as deer, monkeys and Red pandas and wooden bridges and nomad house and shelters help us to think about rural life of Nepal. Likewise; we move our steps to the Selep Kharka with view of River valleys, green hills, wide meadows and waterfalls.

Day 08 – Trek to Olangchungola (3208m.a.s.l) – 7 hours walk – we will walk on the flat trail for one hour to get Jogim; which is surrounded by snow-capped and rocky hills. From Jogim, the trail leads us through the rhododendron and brooms forest to get Ramite where we will stop for the lunch. While trekking from Ramite to Olangchungola; if we are lucky and observed then possibly to see the Red pandas. Olangchungola is a beautiful Sherpa village and offers to explore a beautiful monastery; which is believed to be 465 years old and possible to see a golden manuscript.

Day 09 – Trek to Upper Langmale (3893m.a.s.l) – 5 hours walk – Already we entered high alpine zone and the area is completely wilderness, there won’t be any villages and the trail is miserable because there are so many tracks of animals; which are similar with trekking trail. We have to follow stone sign to get right direction. We will have our lunch in Jadak and rest of the trek takes about three hours to get Upper Langmale to spend cool and cold night.

Day 10 – Trek to Pass camp (4745m.a.s.l) – 6 hours walk – This area is well known as inhabitants of snow-leopards due to covered by the snow and high alpine region. Most of the time we will do up and down hill trail and the area offers to see panoramic mountain views, rocky moraines and deep valley to the southwards. Our destination for tonight is Pass camp; which is 4745 meters high above the sea level and offers to see beautiful sunset view on the background of White Mountains.

Day 11 – Trek to Chaurikharka (4594m.a.s.l) – Chaurikharka means pastureland of female yaks so can be seen thousands of Yaks or grazing around. We will start our trek earlier than previous days due to cross Lumba Sumba pass. This is one of the hardest day of the trip but still would be one of the memorable hike of the life due to see panoramic mountain views, glaciers, snowy landscapes and beautiful sunrise. From the top of the pass we will walk down an approximately 4 hours to get Chaurikharka; which is our destination for tonight.
We climb the Lumba Sumba Peak and descend down to Chaurikharka (4594m) for night’s stay.

Day 12 – Trek to Thudam (3500m.a.s.l) – 6 hours walk – After three hours walk from Chaurikharka appear a junction trail; one goes to Lhasa Tibet and another goes to Thudam so definitely we will take way to Thudam and three hours walk from junction trail we will be in Thudam village which a small Sherpa village and has a couples of homestays and teashop.

Day 13 – Trek to Kharka (2877m.a.s.l) – 6 hours walk – Trek from Thudam to Kharka is very pleasant due to walk through the bushy and bamboo forested trail and the area is well known as habitants of Red Panda so if we are lucky then great chances to capture some photos of this endangered specious. While we heading toward Kharka, we will have beautiful view of Makalu and its beautiful ranges and Chhujung River valleys.

Day 14 – Trek to Chyamthang (2229m.a.s.l) – 6 hours walk –Most of the time we will walk through the forest pass by gigantic pastureland, moraines, River valleys and wide meadows. There are some hilltop that offers to see massif view of Makalu, Arun River and some settlements called Ridha, Kimathanka and as well as Chyamthang which is our destination for tonight. Chyamthang is a Sherpa village and has couple of teashop and homestays to spend the night with warm Sherpa hospitalities.

Day 15 – Trek to Hatiya (1595m.a.s.l) – 5 hours walk – Already we entered into Makalu Barun national park and Arun valley which is very famous as habitants of flora and fauna so while we are walking; we can see many specious birds, flying butterflies and trek would very pleasant due to see panoramic view of Makalu and dozens of villages which are settled over the vertical land.

Day 16 – Trek to Gola – 5 hours walk – Today we will head toward Gola village; which is a small village of Sherpa, Tamang and Rai peoples. After three hours walk from Hatiya village appear a confluence of Arun and Barun River where will stop for the lunch. From here we will walk another two hours to get Gola village with the view of cultivated land, terraced field, green hills, River valleys, huge rocky hills and far view of Makalu.

Day 17 – Trek to Gadhi (1810m.a.s.l) – 5 hours walk – The trail leads us through the verdant paddy field, cardamom gardens and dozens of villages which are especially inhabitant by the Gurung people and famous as Gurkhas all over the world. Most of the time we will do up and down but still it would be very pleasant walk due to meet several times with local peoples and kids are hoping to get some candies from the tourist. There are dozens of teashop and basic guesthouses in Gola village and has beautiful ground to set up our tent for camping.

Day 18 – Trek to Num village (1572m.a.s.l) and drive to Tumlingtar – Trek from Gadhi to Num takes approximately three hours and linked with motor road so after lunch in Num village we will take Jeep to get Tumlingtar which is situated just bank of the Arun river and has a airport that connected with Kathmandu.
Day 19 – Fly back to Kathmandu – After breakfast in Tumlingtar we will fly for 45 minutes to get Kathmandu then escort to Hotel.

Autumn: autumn season is considered as best season to do any trekking routes in Nepal so if trekkers are planing to explore Lumba Sumba trek in autumn season then middle of the September to end of November would be the best season for them because the autumn season offers to see magnificent Himalayan views, clear sky without any clouds.

Spring: This is the second best season to explore Nepalese Himalaya due to see crystal mountain views. The temperatures are warmer although if the winter is still lingering, you might encounter more snow at higher elevations. However, you will be rewarded with the colorful spring blooms.

Required permits and trekking guide – Lumba Sumba trek is expanded in Kanchenjunga Area project and Makalu Barun national park so for those trekkers who want to do Lumba Sumba trek then they have to buy permit cards for both region and have to hire a guide and need to be registered as a trekking guide by Ministry of Tourism and civil aviation.

Food – During the trek; we provides you all kinds of meals as pasta, Noddles, Potatoes, organic vegetables, Local breads, eggs and as well as Nepali traditional meals known as Dall-Bhat which is serves rice with lentil soup, vegetable curry and typical pickles.

Water – Please carry your own water bottlebe mindful of the environmental impact your purchase/plastic bottle will have.Untreated water is available everywhere so Carry your own water treatment system.

Accommodation – You will be sleeping in tent and every two clients equal to a tent. The tent and bed would be comfortable and set up with thick mattress , pillows and good quality of sleeping bag. you will need to carry your own toilet paper. Toilet paper is available for purchase throughout the trek.

One can get fairly excited about a trip to a previously unknown location. But while traveling you need to make sure that you have all materials that you would require to be ready for every possible situation. and here in Nepal, you will most definitely need to pack a few things for your stay to be as smooth and memorable as possible.
